‘Prose as sensual, perfumed and parti-coloured as a wedding basket of ladoo, inset with gems of pure poetry' [Desmond Elliott Prize judges]
Preti Taneja's debut novel, We That Are Young, is a modern-day King Lear that bursts with energy and fierce, beautifully measured rage. It presents a startling insight into modern India, the rise of religious nationalism, the clash of youth and age, the intensity of life (and the ever-present spectre of death) in one of the world's fastest growing economies. It is the tragedy of our times - for all time.
Preti Taneja was born and grew up in the UK. We That Are Young won the 2018 Desmond Elliot Prize for the best debut of the year. It was also shortlisted for the Republic of Consciousness Prize, the Books are my Bag Readers Choice Awards, and India's Shakti Bhatt First Book prize, and longlisted for the Jhalak Prize, the Folio Prize and for Europe’s most prestigious award for a work of world literature, the Prix Jan Michalski. It has been translated into seven languages to date and will soon be a major international TV series from the makers of Narcos.
‘A novel on the grand scale but not grandiose: wide in its cultural reference, profound in its resonance, lofty in moral judgement… as remarkable to the ear as it is revelatory to the soul.’ [Desmond Elliott Prize for Fiction]
Preti will be in conversation with the novelist, Umi Sinha.
